Following the NGO report on child labor, Samsung suspend its partnership with a Chinese manufacturer.
Samsung announced that it had temporarily suspended its contract with Dongguan Shinyang Electronics, a Chinese subcontractor, recently singled out for employing workers under 16 years of age.
This decision follows the report of a Chinese NGO that has sounded the alarm on July 9. In its report, the NGO announced at least five children had worked for the subcontractor specializing in the manufacture of covers for phones and other parts. These children would be paid by the same half an adult for equal work. If this report proves accurate by the Chinese authorities, the suspension could therefore become final between the two groups.
Zero tolerance advocated by Samsung
The South Korean company reported in a press release that promotes zero tolerance for child labor and promises to strengthen its monitoring despite his efforts. The group claims to have inspected three times Dongguan Shinyang Electronics since 2013, most recently in June. An inspection deemed ineffective by the NGO also denounced other abuses by the Chinese company. Including, above the law and not compensated in wages overtime, lack of insurance or training.
This is the first time that Samsung takes such action on child labor. Other manufacturers such as Apple, have recently been singled out for their lack of action on the working conditions of their subcontractors.
